Today's hike was easier than yesterday's hike. We drove to the other side of the park and only had to hike down a really steep (here you should be picturing the forest floor as a ladder) trail to reach the family of gorillas. The actual distance may have been shorter but we hiked at 8000 feet today so the thin air did increase the level of difficulty.
Unlike the other family we saw, this family has some immature males as well as the silverback and mature females with babies. In the 1990's, Uganda had about 360 gorillas in the wild and it now has a little over a 1000 gorillas. The trackers monitor the gorillas all day even after the tourists have left in order to make sure they remain healthy and continue to thrive.
This baby is only 8 months old
These are all from Henry's big camera and are a mix of the 2 different families.
The food at the lodge is outstanding with 3 courses for lunch and dinner.
Tomorrow we fly back to Entebbe, get a covid test and wait 24 hours in Entebbe for the results before we can proceed to Kenya. If we do not pass our covid test then we will be stuck at the Boma Guesthouse for 10 days. That is like being stuck at The Heritage Inn in New Milford for 10 days.
Almost all of the tourists we have met are from the United States. I guess because we are doing so well with vaccine distribution. Here in Uganda, the people who work in the tourist industry have been vaccinated but very few of the others. Almost everyone here is wearing masks though. It's insane to see people doing incredibly dangerous things like riding 3 to a single motorcycle on these crazy bumpy dirt roads while also wearing masks.
So amazing! Have a great time!
